About tarmac driveways
Tarmac is laid hot over a compacted sub-base and rolled to a firm, smooth surface.
Edging such as block paving or kerbs holds the edges and adds a contrasting border.
Standard tarmac is not permeable, so drainage needs thinking about, especially for front gardens.
Well suited to
- Long and larger driveways
- A plain, practical finish
- Matching the look of the road and pavement
Things to consider
- Drainage needs to be planned, as standard tarmac doesn't let water through.
- Fresh tarmac can be marked by sharp turning or heavy point loads (such as stands) in hot weather while it hardens.
- Colour options are more limited than resin or block paving.
Looking after it
Sweep regularly and deal with any oil spills promptly.
