About block paving driveways
Common laying patterns include herringbone, basketweave and stretcher bond. Herringbone is often chosen for driveways because the blocks interlock well under vehicle turning.
Permeable block paving is available, using wider joints and a specially designed base so water drains through.
Because it's made of individual blocks, small areas can be lifted and relaid, for example after work on underground services.
Well suited to
- Traditional and contemporary homes alike
- Patterns, borders and contrasting colours
- Areas where future access underneath might be needed
Things to consider
- Joints can attract weeds and moss over time.
- Joint sand may need topping up occasionally.
- A properly prepared base is essential to avoid sinking or rutting.
Looking after it
Sweep regularly, deal with weeds early and re-sand joints when needed.
