Concrete driveways

Concrete driveways are poured as a solid slab over a prepared base. They can be finished plain, brushed for grip, or stamped and coloured for a decorative effect.

About concrete driveways

Brushed finishes add texture and grip. Pattern-imprinted concrete is stamped while wet to resemble stone, slate or brick.

Movement joints are cut or formed in the slab to control where cracking happens as the concrete expands and contracts.

Standard concrete is not permeable, so drainage needs to be planned.

Well suited to

  • A strong, solid surface
  • Plain, practical finishes or decorative imprinted styles
  • Heavier vehicles when built to a suitable thickness

Things to consider

  • Concrete needs time to cure before it's driven on.
  • Repairs can be harder to blend in than with block paving.
  • Drainage needs to be planned, as standard concrete is non-permeable.

Looking after it

Sweep and wash occasionally. Decorative imprinted concrete may benefit from periodic resealing.
